Theatre, Cinema, and Casinos

Budapest has a thriving theatre and cinema scene housed in historic buildings and modern multiplexes. Additionally, the city also offers a handful of casinos for those who enjoy a little bit of gambling. Here are some notable venues for Budapest’s theatre, cinema, and casinos.

THEATRE

Budapest has a rich theatre tradition, with over 30 drama and cabaret theatres in the city. The National Dance Theatre was the first theatre to stage plays in Hungary. Other established theatres include the Madách Theatre, Nemzeti Theatre, Pesti Theatre, and Laser Theatre.

The Merlin Theatre is notable for its English-language performances, while Trafó is known for showcasing contemporary arts. Mikroszkóp Színpad is famous for its satirical cabaret shows and the Moulin Rouge for its performances.

The most prestigious of Budapest’s theatres is the József Katona Theatre, which gained fame following performances in Paris and London. The Vígszínház, or “comedy theatre”, specializes in musicals, as does the Madách Theatre. In the summer, rock operas are staged on Margaret Island, known for the quality of the productions and the stunning island setting.

CINEMA

Budapest has a range of cinemas, from those built in the 1920s and 1930s to modern multiplexes found in shopping malls such as Duna Plaza, Westend City Center, and Corvin Filmpalota. Foreign films in Hungary are often dubbed and subtitled into Hungarian. Those who prefer to watch films in their original language should look for screenings labeled “angol nelvű”. For films in English without subtitles, look for the words “angol nyelvű, felirat nélkül”.

In addition to foreign films, Hungarian films, both recent releases and vintage classics, are regularly screened. The renovated, Moorish style Uránia Filmszínház film palace is a notable venue from the golden age of Hungarian cinema.
